I’m tired of it. I’m tired of girls putting each other down based on what they look like. I’m tired of the constant comparing of who’s the “skinniest” and who’s the “prettiest”. Something I learned over the year is that comparing yourself to other girls will not do anything for yourself. You can tell yourself that you want to lose weight to look like a certain model or change your hair color to “fit in more” but if you are trying to find self-approval or human approval, you will never get to a place of contentment. The only way you can find true contentment is through and from the Lord.
By comparing yourself to other people, we tend to point out the traits in ourselves that other people don’t have in order to make ourselves feel better. How is that pleasing to God and how is that a good way to live? Notice how most of the comparing we do is only based on our outward appearance. God however is different. One of my favorite verses in the Bible says in 1 Samuel 16:7, ” Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” How comforting is it to know God doesn’t care about how much we weigh, how much make up we wear, and how expensive our clothes are.
For a class project, I had to write about someone I love. I chose one of my best friends named Heidi. I wrote long pages on all of the qualities I loved about her. After reading back the letter, I noticed that not once did I mention any outward appearance traits, but instead I focused on her heart. I wrote about the woman of God she is and how much she has been there for me in my life. We don’t love people just based off of their outward appearance, but their heart.
I encourage you to examine your own heart. Are you too focused on trying to feel content based off of looks? Do you look to the heart of each person or only on their appearance? Go through your day knowing that God loves you unconditionally no matter how you look. You are the perfect in His eyes. He looks at you and adores what He sees. God is pleased when you accept the beauty he formed and fashion in you. The beauty of His Spirit radiating from the inside out. So next time you stand in front of the mirror, hold your head up high and smile knowing that God created you exactly the way you are. You are
unique and perfect in His standards and most of all, you are loved by the Lord unconditionally!
